Bruxism (teeth grinding) usually occurs at night while sleeping. This is known as nocturnal bruxism of which most patients are unaware. It may be characterized by jaw ache/pain especially in the morning time when the patient is awake. Patient may also experience headaches, toothache, or TMJ problems. Teeth grinding is sometime aggravated by stress or anxiety. Teeth grinding in most kids is "normal" and often resolves on its own. For adults, however, night guard may be needed to prevent teeth damage or any other dental complications (e.g. reduction in facial height thereby giving the patient an older appearance; tooth sensitivity; TMJ disorder).
